The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has taken a major step toward sustainability by developing a new CO₂ Calculator. Created in partnership with the Green Producers Club, the tool helps the global snow sports community measure and manage its carbon footprint. The initiative has already earned the prestigious Inspired Innovation award, recognizing its contribution to environmental progress in winter sports.

The FIS CO₂ Calculator was designed to support event organizers, teams, and venues in tracking their emissions more accurately. By gathering data on energy use, transport, materials, and waste, the tool provides a clear picture of an event’s environmental impact. This information enables users to make informed decisions to reduce emissions and promote greener operations.

FIS President Johan Eliasch emphasized that sustainability is now a central part of the federation’s long-term vision. He noted that the calculator aligns with FIS’s goal to lead the way in environmental responsibility across the global snow sports industry. The federation hopes the tool will become a model for other international sporting organizations.

The collaboration with Green Producers Club combined expertise from both the sports and environmental sectors. The club specializes in tools and systems that help entertainment and production industries lower their environmental footprint. Together, they developed a user-friendly platform tailored to the unique needs of winter sports events.

The calculator’s design focuses on simplicity and transparency. It allows users to enter data on different aspects of event management, from athlete transportation to power consumption. The system then estimates the total emissions and suggests ways to cut carbon output. This empowers organizers to track improvements over time and plan future events more sustainably.

The introduction of the FIS CO₂ Calculator comes at a critical moment for the winter sports industry. Rising global temperatures and unpredictable snow conditions are already affecting skiing and snowboarding venues worldwide. Experts warn that climate change poses a serious threat to the future of snow sports, making sustainability a top priority for federations and local communities alike.

By launching this innovation, FIS aims to encourage a culture of accountability and awareness. Many event hosts and national teams have already shown interest in using the calculator to assess their upcoming competitions. Early adopters say the tool has helped them identify new opportunities to save energy and reduce waste.

The Inspired Innovation award, which recognizes outstanding advancements in sustainability, was presented to FIS for its leadership and proactive approach. Judges praised the project for blending technological innovation with practical environmental benefits. The recognition highlights FIS’s commitment to integrating climate action into its global operations.

Beyond measuring emissions, the federation plans to use the collected data to develop long-term sustainability benchmarks. These benchmarks will allow FIS to monitor progress and share best practices across its member associations. Officials hope that, over time, the initiative will contribute to broader climate goals within the sports industry.

The Green Producers Club expressed its pride in collaborating with FIS on a project that demonstrates how technology and sports can work together for a greener planet. The organization said the partnership shows that even high-profile events with large audiences can operate with environmental responsibility at their core.

Environmental advocates have welcomed the move, noting that actions like these can inspire fans, athletes, and organizations to take climate issues seriously. The new tool also aligns with the growing demand for transparency and accountability from sporting bodies regarding their environmental impact.

With the FIS CO₂ Calculator now available, snow sports organizers have an effective tool to build a more sustainable future. The project stands as an example of how innovation, collaboration, and environmental awareness can shape a cleaner path forward for global sports.
