China has banned hidden door handles on electric vehicles and becomes the first country to take this step. The decision targets controversial designs that gained popularity through Tesla. Authorities acted as electric vehicles face rising scrutiny from global safety watchdogs. Several deadly incidents triggered the debate, including two fatal crashes in China involving Xiaomi electric cars. Investigators suspected power failures prevented occupants from opening the doors.
New Safety Rules for Vehicle Doors
Under the new regulations, manufacturers may sell cars only with mechanical door releases inside and outside. State media reported the details of the new rules. The regulations aim to ensure access to vehicles during emergencies. Officials want to reduce risks during power failures and accidents.
The new rules will take effect on 1 January 2027. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology published the technical requirements. Every passenger door, except the boot, must include a recessed space for the handle. The recessed space must measure at least 6cm by 2cm by 2.5cm. Regulators want to guarantee easy access for rescue efforts.
Interior Requirements and Transition Period
Inside the car, clear signs must show how to open each door. These signs must measure at least 1cm by 0.7cm. Authorities want passengers to understand door operation during emergencies. The rules focus on clarity and speed in critical situations.
Cars already approved and close to market entry will receive extra time. These models will get another two years to update their designs. Regulators want to avoid sudden disruption to ongoing production plans.
Impact on China’s New Energy Vehicle Market
Hidden door handles dominate China’s new energy vehicle market. The category includes electric cars, hybrids, and fuel cell vehicles. About 60% of the top 100 best-selling models use hidden handles. Government-controlled newspaper China Daily cited the data.
Although the rules apply only to cars sold in China, global effects appear likely. China plays a major role in the international car industry. Changes in its regulations often influence manufacturers worldwide.
Global Attention on Electric Door Handles
Safety regulators in the United States already investigate electric door handles used by Tesla. European authorities also consider introducing similar rules. Concerns focus on failures that trap passengers inside vehicles.
In November, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation. The probe examined reports of electric-powered door handles suddenly failing. The agency responded to complaints involving children trapped inside vehicles.
The agency received nine complaints related to 2021 Model Y vehicles. The Model Y remains the company’s flagship electric car. In four cases, owners broke windows to free passengers.
