Bezos’ Blue Origin Plans Satellite Network to Challenge Starlink

Blue Origin, the rocket company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, announced plans for a vast satellite communications network. The company said it will launch more than 5,400 satellites into orbit. The project aims to create a new global system for continuous internet connectivity. Blue Origin positioned the plan as a direct challenge to existing satellite internet providers.

TeraWave Targets Faster Global Data Links

Blue Origin named the new satellite network TeraWave. The company said the system will deliver continuous internet access worldwide. It will also move large volumes of data much faster than rival satellite services. Despite the scale of the plan, Blue Origin will still operate fewer satellites than Starlink. Starlink currently dominates the global satellite internet market with far more spacecraft in orbit.

    Different Markets, Different Strategies

Starlink operates as part of Elon Musk’s rocket company SpaceX. It provides internet and phone services directly to individual customers. Blue Origin said TeraWave will not target private consumers. The company plans to focus on data centres, businesses, and government clients instead. This strategy sets TeraWave apart from consumer-focused satellite networks.

    Speed Claims and Competitive Landscape

Blue Origin said TeraWave will reach upload and download speeds of up to six terabits per second. The company said these speeds exceed those of current commercial satellite services. Another competitor in this field is Amazon, the technology giant founded by Bezos. Bezos remains Amazon’s executive chairman after stepping down as chief executive in 2021.

    Amazon’s Leo Network Expands

Amazon operates its own satellite venture called Leo. The company currently has around 180 satellites in orbit. It launched dozens more satellites just last week. Amazon plans to deploy more than 3,000 satellites in total. Like Starlink, Leo focuses more on the general public. Amazon markets Leo as a way to deliver high-speed internet access globally. The company has not announced a final completion date.

    Launch Timeline and Recent Milestones

Blue Origin said it will begin launching TeraWave satellites by the end of 2027. The company recently marked several major technical achievements. In November, it successfully landed a rocket booster on a floating platform for the first time. Only SpaceX had achieved this milestone before.

    High-Profile Spaceflight Draws Criticism

In April, Blue Origin launched an 11-minute space flight with an all-female crew. The crew included Bezos’ wife Lauren Sánchez, singer Katy Perry, and television presenter Gayle King. Some commentators criticised the mission publicly. They described the flight as tone deaf. Critics said the trip felt inappropriate during a period of economic hardship.
