Brazil’s Supreme Court found Jair Bolsonaro guilty of attempting a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 election.
Three of five justices convicted him on five counts, with one justice yet to vote.
Justice Cármen Lúcia ruled for conviction Thursday, after Justice Luiz Fux voted to acquit the former president.
The court will determine Bolsonaro’s sentence once all five votes are cast, potentially sending him to prison for decades.
Political Tensions Escalate
The ruling has intensified Brazil’s political divide and could trigger a response from the United States government.
Donald Trump previously called Bolsonaro’s trial a “witch hunt” and linked tariffs on Brazilian goods to the verdict.
Observers warn Washington may impose additional sanctions, further straining diplomatic relations with Brazil.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes said Bolsonaro led a coup conspiracy and headed a criminal organization.
Bolsonaro’s Defence and Ongoing Influence
Bolsonaro avoided the hearing, sending lawyers to represent him while remaining under house arrest since August 5.
His lawyers promised to appeal the ruling to the full Supreme Court of 11 justices.
Supporters rallied in the streets demanding acquittal, while opponents celebrated the court’s decision.
Despite his conviction and a separate ban blocking him from office until 2030, Bolsonaro retains strong political influence.
He is likely to designate a political heir to challenge President Lula da Silva next year.
Allied lawmakers and his three sons may seek congressional amnesty to reduce his sentence.
